"Textured"Walls

12 years ago in a fit of DIY lunacy I textured a wall with joint compound and a trowel in my living/dining area. Several years later I painted over the faux whatever-it-was but of course the slathered texture is still there. Now I've had a marvelous idea for that area of the room that involves wallpaper. Which calls for smooth walls I imagine. My question is what is the most expedient, cost-effective way of getting rid of the texture? Thank you in advance for your suggestions!
