Please help! I've got the flower types-- will they work together?

Hi everyone,

I'm very new to gardening and would like to help my mother redo her corner garden. She's starting from absolute scratch.

I love purple, blue and white flower combinations. After searching online to find reasonably low maintenance flowers, I've decided that it would be nice to feature the following:

  • Artemisa Powis Castle
  • Alium Gladiator
  • White Candytuft
  • Gayfeather
  • Globe Thistle
  • Elizabeth Cook Delphinium

Do you all think these would go well together? Any suggestions on the arrangement for a corner garden?

Thank you so very much!

-Lisa

Just a thought but have you looked at bloom times for these plants . Do you want your plants all blooming at the same time and finished blooming at the same time or do you want only one plant dominating the view at one time ?In a mixed garden for extended bloom it is important to pick plants that bloom early , mid season and late season. So along with what you have picked as main plants you may want to intersperse with other complimentary plants that either bloom in conjunction with your main focal plants or layer plants ( ie. bulbs under the plants that bloom early and say when your alliums are blooming they are dying back and when your alliums are dying back ( by the way the heads make an interesting addition to the garden when the blooms are finished ) then another plant is ready to take over the blooms. For me I grow daylilies .....extra early, early , mid , late and very late blooms take me pretty much thru the season . However early for a daylily is maybe end of june so I have other plants like snowdrops, crocus , tulips, daffodils, narcissus that take up the early spring , then alliums and iris , solomons seal and early perennial poppies , then come the summer plants .....so just something to consider so that you have bloom from spring to fall .

Just a couple of other thoughts ......I am of a mind that Mother Nature never makes mistakes ......she mixes and matches colors and no matter what is planted the colors compliment each other . I also thought if I can find some pics I would show you what my gardens look like thru the season just to illustrate what I said above. I find there is a 2 week lull where the spring plants finish and the summer blooms take over and after gardening for almost 18 years I am still looking for plant to fill this 2 week lull but havent found anything so far.

I have all colors and sizes and shapes ( I plant some things just for architechtural interest) and blooms go from early spring (march = snowdrops to summer ( daylilies and other perennials including hostas ...in full sun ) to fall ( black eyed susans and that kind of plant ) Hope this helps you decide what and how you want to plant up your garden. Oh I should mention that although many gardens are specimen gardens ie. a few plants and mostly mulch .....as you can see that is not what I like .
