That doesn't sound extreme, although choice of pot material will likely matter. If the plants are in shade, they're shielded from the hot, scorching sun. I would avoid metal planters or plastic planters, as those will absorb heat and high heat might damage roots, but a way around that if you are using plastic or metal is to plant a pot inside a pot (inner pot would shield roots from temp extremes, at least to a degree). Conversely, clay will dry out quickly, but it's the same work-around - plastic pot inside clay pot, which keeps moisture in.

Because the rest of the deck is in sun the other hours of the day, there will be lots of reflected light, so you may find you can grow a wide range of plants - sun as well as part-sun plants. Lots and lots of choices. If you describe the pot (size, color, shape) we can offer design suggestions.

The planter is a plastic, gray - 26"x8". It will sit on a stand about 3' high. I'd appreciate any plant material suggestions.

Wax or any cane-type Begonias should enjoy such a spot. Polka dot plant (Hypoestes) and most Alternantheras would too. Sweet potato vines. Persian shield (Strobilanthes dyerianus.) Coleus.
