I ran out of last year's garlic last month so having the new crop is just in time. It has been drying on the front porch for the last 3 weeks, so I trimmed it and boxed it up for storage. I split up one head for lunch and discovered that I had some multiple cloves. I guess that's what you'd call them. They were more like junior garlic heads, but the size of a normal clove. Most of the crop looks normal, but I have quite a few that are so afflicted, mostly of the Ajo Rojo . Would this be caused by planting too close (4"), or harvesting late, or just bad luck?

The seed spent 12 weeks in chill and planted in mid-September. Plant spacing 4", row spacing 12", Fertilzed 3 times over the winter and watered regularly, zone 9A, sandy soil.
