Green lace maples

We have a red lace weeping maple over 20 years old which is so beautiful in one if our front beds and when we redid our large foundation beds 5 years ago we added two green lace maples to the corners.

They have done beautifully until this past New England winter. Both are split and broken at the crown and we don't know what to do. I am afraid that they may be gone but if we cut the damage away won't they revert to upright maples? Any ideas would be appreciated including if it's foolish to replace them. Thanx
