Replacing Wall Strips

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone has found an attractive way to replace the wall strips that cover the seam between the panels. I've seen several ways, including caulking the seams, using joint compound/tape, spackle, and a couple others. I would really like to paint my walls, but they have a small texture to them, so I'd assume using compound/tape would make it obvious where the strips used to be. Some people said spackling wouldn't hold well enough. Just seeing if anyone has experimented and found a nice looking and successful method to go about this.
