I'm afraid if I do sphag that I'll get root rot, so I may do a pot or basket. When you say Cattleya light...I'm not sure what that means. I have 1 Catt, but it's new and in bloom so I've just kept in in the sunroom (55F at night, 70-85F during the day). It's been fine, but I need to read up on how to keep it happy once it's done blooming. So, for the Neo does it prefer lower temps? High light? Direct or indirect?

Not an expert on these but... I try to give mine as much sun as possible (direct sun from 10:00-1:00'ish during summer), intermediate temps and plastic pots for me. I also use a fine bark mix, as I'm not real good with spagh.

Cattleya light was my attempt to describe how much light it needs? The old problem of different Climates....Someone in Alaska talking orchids to someone in Hawaii is an extreme example.

Looked up orchid society records and it tends to flower here late summer/early autumn.

The spag method is the traditional way to grow the plant and because the spag and plant are above the level of the pot, rot is less likely to occur.

The cool growing bit describes how tolerant of lower temperatures at night in winter the plant is.....but what might be fine here may not be so good there. Perhaps Bob can give you an idea of temperature ranges ( I know he said Intermediate?)

This is all very helpful. Direct sun at the hottest part of the day seems crazy, but I will certainly try it!

I would say vanda light... Mine sat on my patio table (east facing) last summer with a bunch of other mini-vandas, if it was going to be brutally hot and no storms were forecast, I would put up the umbrella at @noon, while I was home for lunch. The house shaded them after about 1:00. I wasn't stingy with the water either, almost every day if not more for the bare root ones.

Mine are in this house at Bench top level with mostly cattleyas. At latitude 33.56 South heavily shaded in summer, less so in winter. Fan runs 24/7. Heater runs in the early morning in winter to lift day temp a bit. (Glass-House setting tropical Savannah with in winter setting cool nights and warm days and watering about once a week and then only on a day that promises to be sunny.)

Did you research the traditional method of the mound of spag? Also, there are some nice pics of "'Shutennou" on the net.
