Yes, unless you like to look at dead flowers. Plant leaves (and flowers) that die before their time, often remain on the plants, esp trees do this.

how far down do you cut to remove? Unsure what is meant by a "spike" :)

She means to cut the stem that the flowers are attached to. You should cut it about an inch above the node closest to the plant, which are the "eyes" one stem, which make it look segmented. You could cut it above the node closer to the flowers that hasn't had flowers yet.

Thanks, that makes sense. Trying to start learning how to take care of and grow orchids for a only a month now :)

I cut the spike all the way to the leaves. I don't leave a node. Best to let the plant start over making a new spike in the fall.

I agree with Jane, I'd only try to reflower the spike if the plant was exceptionally robust.
