Stolons that have poked their heads out of the ground and have several pairs of leaves usually have supporting roots and are on their way to becoming independent. Those close to the main plant might need to be treated as cuttings and left in a rooting medium, as long as the tips have begun greening up. Dividing the crown may be much more difficult, since there is a lot of old dead tissue that can be hard to discern and separate from the viable parts.
