Maybe something like this?

What are you trying to do - block out light, just get some privacy? Also - how often is the door used.. every day, or infrequently? Also - are you just trying to dress up the space on the inside?

If you just want to dress up the space - how about a modern rod with a couple of fabric panels that you can pull closed to block out light when needed? Very inexpensive! You would just need to take down the plates on the right side of the door and put them someplace else.
