Dana, I saw that too. It's very pretty. My windows could use the wide wood around them. I keep going back to the picture that AnnaP did of my house. I think yellow is out. I'm leaning toward a darker green. I won't be able to have the house painted very soon. I am still in the research stage. I've been delighted at the many suggestions people have made on Houzz!

I love your house! I would go with a pretty pale yellow. It will really help your flowers pop!

Paint the main body of the home a very pale dusty olive green. Paint the trim, and the door a dusty cream beige.....or, if you want a fun frivolous look, paint the door a deep, raspberry pink.
What a fabulous roof-line......
Consider adding cyprus, cone shaped bushes, on each side of the door........

Love your house, I suggest Sage with white trim. It would be great if you updated the landscape also.

Your house is very similar to mine. My colors are mountain laurel for the body color, mountain peak white for trim, and new london burgundy for sash & door. All by Benjamin Moore. This was the only picture I had handy, I took it last winter in the snow, sorry the weather doesn't show off the colors to much advantage.

Oh, and this type of roof is called a "swept roof".

What about periwinkle blue? Very few people use it - and it not just a beautiful color but will make your house stand out... like a perfect hydrangea. Pale green shutters with cut-outs a the shape of something you love and a front door in a darker shade of the same green or a contrasting color like aqua. Plant white and blue flowers around the house and maybe train a yellow or orange blush climbing rose to cover a trellis. Doesn't it sound just perfect?

I figured you had decided and painted it by now . . . Go to a paint store, put on a blindfold, spin a couple of times, point. There's color number one. Repeat for color number two. Repeat for color number three or use white or cream. I'm kidding . . .sort of. Whatever colors you use, don't forget the shutters and window box.

when we lost our home in 2004 from two Cat 3 hurricanes that hit us directly just three weeks apart, I decided to create as much happiness in the rebuild as possible. Living in a tropical area, I was able to use color to my heart's content. Most people love it, but my dad, seeing it for the first time, asked, "Did you consider something more... neutral?" to which I replied, "There is no beige in a rainbow."

no pink - but I did have a hole drilled through a large conch shell and used it to make a shower head for the outdoor shower. The pink inside the shell is the only pink on the outside. I even chose flowering trees with orange, white or purple blooms - but no pink. Thanks for the compliment on my home. I love yours too.

My grandmother's bungalow was yellow with green trim forever. To my knowledge it still is. I saw another cottage recently that was yellow with RED trim! And I actually loved it. They had a vintage, red bicycle out front with a basket of flowers, red flowers in the window boxes and a small section of red picket fencing.

For a painted exterior, I've always liked shades of the same color -- lighter for the house and darker for the trim -- such as shades of blue. If you want to change the door, you could consider a bold cobalt blue. If you used green, you could use a dark bold emerald green for the door.

If you're going to retire in this home, have you considered adding a porch from the left of the door and above the single window to the corner of the house and wrapping it around the house to cover a narrow porch that could end in a ramp for when those steps become a chore to walk up? You could use a nearly flat roof with a hip corner for the porch roof so as to not detract from the unique roof line.

A soft yellow accented by light blue (with a hint of purple) shutters on the right window. The roof line trim could be a light green. Keeping this storybook like seems ideal. I like the color palatte in the picture I'm including.

glendagw Please show us a picture of your house after you have made your color decisions. You have received so many great ideas here and I'm sure everyone who has contributed or followed would love to see the completed project.

I'm siding a similar style house.....tiny and charming. I've chosen a dark blue/grey with lots of white trim...enhancing the windows and a French door. Plan to stain the front door. Back door to kitchen will be all glass panel in white trim. Window box with lots of color... just change the flowers for accent color change! (Place under single window for balance.) Also, I plan to anchor the house with only hydrangea bushes at the base.....keep it simple!

I love the sound of that. And oh, how I wish I could have hydrangeas - they don't grow well down here. Too hot for them. Post a photo of the house so I can see it!

I'd capitalize on the unusual up swoop of the roofline. The buildings around you are unremarkable, not likely to enhance yours as "borrowed architecture", so you're forced to go it alone. Add narrow, white painted shutters on the single window, matched flower boxes on both sides of the doorway, and a low version of the up swoop as the top trim molding of the single window. Paint all your trim white to unify them, including the ground flower borders, Use yellow body color to understate, yet emphasize cuteness factor, short picket fence as garden surround to give cottage appearance, If you can't afford to decrease the massive size of your porch cover, paint it out to match the roofline, trim, and body color so it will simultaneously coordinate and disappear. It is unfortunate that the door is and porch is off-center, probably only done to accomodate the mailbox. If you can afford to do so, put in a wider "cottage-style front door, centered on your concrete steps, change the roof line of the overhang to a lower profile "swoop", and eliminate my suggested swooped window trim. Too much of a good thing in one plane. The current porch cover fights the swoop, gives the sense the front of the house is arguing with itself.

pamewig: you now have elements of a English Tudor facade, and what looks to be eventual French Doors, which may not open out to anything. Are you planning an elevated front deck extending the front entry to just beyond the left side of the french doors? In any case, grab/steal/plagerize some additional Tudor trim to add t the front of your house. You may have plans to do so, but it's not yet pictured or mentioned.

Your home is just Darling! There are so many colors that would be wonderful! Choose some colors that you love and post where we could see them. The single window to the right would look nice with some trip or shutters.

I have decided on a dark green with white trim, however it may be a while before I can get to it. I never thought so many people would make comments on my little house.

Thoughts from a painter, did display for Ralph Lauren in NYC; I'd call this home The Wave House and play upon that idea. This home begs for creativity to continue.....include the garage in your inventiveness. You live in Colorado....your neighbors will applaud your ideas.....this is not a typical suburban home for usual color charts put out by paint companies.. Some suggestions; use the colors of the ocean, find a carpenter with invention to turn the portico above the steps into a little ship, or hang an outdoor light shaped like one. Some plantings could echo shapes seen in the ocean i.e.; walking stick shrub, maybe add some tufa stone. Paint each of the steps darker as they go down, as depths in the ocean. People will drive by to see your home. For what these suggestions are worth to you.........Have fun.

I agree with those who suggested adding flower boxes and colorful landscaping. If you could add the stone to the foundation that would be great, if not I would go with a light taupe to connect more with the stairs. What a darling, unique home, you are blessed.

I would tend to shy away from a bright color , consider a non color like taupe , paint the supports at the front door roof white , paint the front door perhaps a lovely verdigris color , add a long window box beneath the windows at the left of the front door ..

Charming cottage, and so many good ideas! If you haven't already painted; how about a barely there yellow, like HC36 by Benjamin Moore. Bright White Trim throughout, and a painted front door. You can go classic with a black door, or whimsical with a beautiful color such as aubergine, blueberry, or persimmon Also love window box idea. You can also add a color to the ceiling of your overhang, such as a very pale blue. Remember to consider the house as a whole. Everything cant be the star....it has to work together and be charming overall. Urns overflowing with flowers, brass house numbers, have fun! Post pictures after your done! (Also, consider adding a flowerbed with a curve to it...symmetrical on both sides of front door....Plant dwarf evergreen pine style trees just beyond exterior lines of house with the inside lines of the pines blurring the outside edge of your cottage.(both sides) It will add presence and make the house look placed in its spot.

oh yes, while I love shutters, they don't work for your cottages windows. Shutters were designed to close over the window and protect them from weather. They will look too small on the triple window, love the window box idea though!

Great selection, but definitely yellow hands down. It will make the house look bigger. Another option could be a whitish cream with blue-green turquoise for the trimmings. Try something "out of the box". A nice white or red flowering magnolia tree in the left front yard will make the house look awesome.

It's finally done! I'm sure no one even remembers this Design Dilemma. Now the new paint makes the steps beg for a makeover!

What a great color you chose! Carolina Girl suggested slate for your steps. Why not have the concrete stained to resemble slate using colors from your house, roof and door.
