Keep iris leaves or chop off

I inherited a large iris bed that had been neglected and overgrown with many different types of iris, many from the former Cooley Farms. A wegalia tree overgrew most of the iris so they are very shaded. There are a few blooms this year, but I have started to move the iris that I know won't bloom because of shading. My question is should I keep the huge leaves on the rhizomes for a few months to absorb energy from the sun, or just cut them off? Can't seem to find this information anywhere so I appreciate hearing from someone who can provide justification for keeping them for now.
