While 36" is standard, if you feel that 38" would be more functional for you and your family then go for it. However, keep in mind how long you might be living in the house (resale value). Bar stools with 26" seat height should still work with a 38" counter.

Thank you for your reassurance. My island is going to be 7 1/2' x 4'. I was planning on fitting 4 counter stools along the long side. Do you think that is possible?

That's probably enough space, depending on the width of the stools. Do you know how wide they are?

Standard is 21"-24" of counter width for each stool. 21" is a bit cramped but it can work if your stools are not too wide.

24" stool is the perfect height for my 36" counter so buying 26" should be fine.

if your stools are backless more will visually fit and it wont require the end people to get off in order for the middle people to get on.

If you haven't already installed the cabinetry and countertops keep in mind that the under counter appliances are usually made at 34 1/2" height. The dishwasher will need a filler at the top to cover the difference (even with levelers).

My 38" counter made my gas range too low for the burners to clear. I had to have a base built to raise it. Please keep this in mind if you have a free-standing range.

26" stool is just right for a 38" counter .
