I planted Mastuerzo Jewel Mix Nasturtium this spring for the first time. Some of the leaves are a good 4 inches across. The leaves are bigger than I expected. The plant has not flowered yet,

I have seen seeds labeled Jewel Mix, but I have never seen Mastuerzo attached to it. Do you know if that is a particular color mix? I would love some 4 inch leaves.

This might or might not help for next year. I planted some long forgotten brand of Jewel mix years ago. Every fall I let them go to seed and harvest them and let they dry out and store in ziplocs. I've planted this 'free' seed for at least five years. Generally, the bigger the pot I plant them in the bigger they get and what I think is key, they have something to grow up on (like the base of a gazebo in my case) or trail down from like a hanging basket. The ones that are vining up the gazebo have six inch leaves and have begun to flower. Perhaps the sport seed I harvest reverts back to some long forgotten parent plant that needs to really be able to climb or trail. Same seed in small pots on a shelf keep the small leaves. Same thing in the ground with no supports. Weird, huh? It's all a big science experiment. :) Your recipe sounds delicious by the way.

The flower colors are all in the standard jewel tone mix.

That is very interesting, Windytown. I do like to collect seed whenever I can. Also, I read some years ago that nasturtium seeds can be pickled and used as you would capers. I have not tried it yet, but I think it is worth trying at least once. Do you have to give your vines some help in climbing the gazebo, or do they do it on their own? I have never noticed any sort of tendrils on my nasturtiums.

carmellia, my nasturtiums grow somewhat like a pole bean, winding around the support. I found an excellent article describing the different types of nasturtiums. For some reason I cannot paste a link here but it can be found by searching for: sfgate types of nasturtiums. From the info there I think I might have the tall vining variety called 'Jewel of Africa'. Mine never reach the 6-8 feet length mentioned in the article. I'm sure that's due to our shorter growing season compared to San Francisco. :)
