Guess again. Damage is from a small chewer of one kind or another. Some thots: slugs; snails; caterpillars; squirrels?

EDIT: Hmm, looks like first comment has been deleted. As I recall, that person suggested thrips and that's why I said "guess again."

Thanks for your suggestions! No squirrels around here and upon night inspection I've seen no slugs or snails or trails of such. Maybe some kind of worm or caterpillar I've yet to discover. I powdered the tree with diatomaceous earth as well as put it at the base of the trunk in hopes that if it is a critter as opposed to a fungus or bacterium, it'll be bothered enough to make an exit. A little late but I'm getting an education at least.

It IS thrips! It took me YEARS to figure this out. Every spring I feel like I have to share. I wonder why nobody talks about it. Maybe it is a local problem . I used Monterey Garden Insect with Spinosad.
