So I've been growing cannas the past few years with great luck! I saw the post "Nighttime temperature for cannas," but it mostly talked about dividing them, not actually the temperature question, so I'm asking. Today was a beautiful 70 degrees, and I had all of my tropicals outside in southern Wisconsin. Tonight's low is supposed to be 50, with 70 again tomorrow. Can I safely leave my tropicals outside overnight? I have a few varieties of canna, a Thailand giant EE, three basjoo bananas and some brugmansia cuttings. I've never had them outside this early before. Since the cannas, especially, are pretty darn hardy, I'm actually considering planting them early! I had some tubers get left behind and freeze last year after I dug my plants up....and when I found the tubers, I rescued them, potted them and they grew into beautiful plants over the winter. So they are probably even tougher than I originally thought! I'm just wondering...if I'm putting my potted tropicals outside on nice days, is it safe to leave them out at night too? I'm assuming a low of 50 is ok. Can I even chance keeping them out at lower temps, as long as it's not below freezing? Here is a pic of some of my tropicals in the back yard today! I can't wait to get them in the ground!
