Strep Leaf Updates!

Just thought I would share! Only two of the four leaf sections out of twelve have sent out babies so far... but hey, that's better than nothing. I had a sinking awful feeling that NONE Of them would root! ;-) So coming from a newbie.. rooting Strep leaves CAN be done!

shihtzu4su, you can also root strep leaves like you would a AV leaf. Leave about 1 - 1 1/2" of stem. Dust the cut with cinnamon and treat like any other leaf being rooted. You will not get as many babies, on avg. 3-4 but the chances of leaf rot is reduced. Either method works well, nice job!

yes im gettimg a little worried! :-P there are little green starts all along two of them... at least 3-4 on two of the leaf sections!

Woohoo congratulations! Any updates? Stumbled on this thread looking for info on rooting streps and episcia. I had tried strep leaves last year using this method and they all rotted on me. I recently received two more trying to give it another go. I'm thinking about just rooting them like AV leaves since I really want them to take!

yup heres the update! ;) these are just the ones i am keeping! never mind the 10 cups just like these that im not sure what to do with! :-P

Alright! That's so exciting! So how long did it take from putting the leaves down to getting babies?

Well, let's see. I put them down on March 19 I believe... and they started sending up babies around April 18, and probably a month later, I cut them apart and transferred them to little cups! So it was about two months from when I put them down to when they were big enough to separate. :-)

Oh Su! Wonderful! And Holy Cow!!!!! Did you say babies popped up in a month????? Sadly my strep pieces didn't live. Oh well, if at first you don't suceed, try, try again! Can't wait to see flower pix! Rosie

wow - dbarron are you serious?? two months?? cool! :) rosie - aw im sorry! i hope that you can get another leaf or two! i know ebay has leaves on there sometimes. thats where i got mine. :)

Looking good! I propagate a lot of these and you are doing fine. Keep the babies potted very high so the crowns don't get down into the soil when you transplant.

A couple months ago I started a pot of streptocarpus leaf cuttings, using three methods: a whole leaf with stem inserted into the potting mix, a rectangular leaf segment without the midrib, and a rectangular leaf segment with the midrib.

All three methods produced multiple plantlets at about the same time.

I think the key is to use a well-draining mix that doesn't stay too damp. And patience.
