I have a friend who sells morels in our local farmers market. Last week we picked half a grocery sack of these, out by our milking shed and right where I keep some of my bees. I had hardly mowed there, last summer, as I had squash growing there too.

I notice they're growing by the Jerusalem artichokes that I did not harvest tubers from last year. My line of thinking was directed to this anomaly because there are no trees nearby the shrooms. It is not likely the elm roots are prolific in that soil, either. It must be the chokes.

If I find more, maybe I'll just eat them saying a special prayer for the blessing.

I asked my friend whether picking them would wipe'em out. He said no. So we ate ours. We have a plum tree where I found them and oak trees, just over the fence.

I'm going with the idea that you gave them to me. I'll keep it mulched and undisturbed in that area. :D

There is a facebook group called Oklahoma Wildcrafting. Lots of mushroom IDs and other edible native plants. Very interesting.

Growing up in Michigan, we used to hunt morels every spring. Man, they are tasty. I have never seen one in Oklahoma.

They do exist here in southern OK, but I've never traipsed around our woodland looking for them as I fear the snakes more than I'd enjoy the mushrooms. People who have the morels growing on their own land generally don't publicize it because they don't want people coming onto their property and taking their morels. I know people here in my own county (and neighborhood) who have them growing in their woodland areas.

I've got 8 out of my backyard so far. Pleasant little surprises.
