transplanting seedlings

last fall I planted a lot of bottle brush buckeye buckeyes. quite a few are now coming up & I'm thinking the sooner I get them potted or relocated the better. they are 4" to 10" tall & about 3/16" in diameter. I did dig up 2 & they already have a long tap root & I'm thinking that if I let them get much bigger there is more risk of damaging the tap root. any opinions??

What are they growing in-container? Seed tray? The ground? You might want to investigate "rootmaker" and other air-root-pruning pots. These work by causing the developing roots to come into contact with air, thereby dying at their tips, promoting a more fibrous root system. IT's one of the ways growers are trying to come to terms with the root anomalies common to container-grown plants.

they are in the ground. I'm afraid that if I let them get bigger i'll break the tap root when I dig them.

if they are leafed out.. they stay there until fall ...

the tap root is an old wives tale.. and COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT to the trees [or just about any other plants] future ... that is not a reasonable variable in your decision to move them ...
