It is fine. Some years they freeze down to the ground in really cold weather and other years only part (or none, depending on the temperatures) of the branches freeze back. Since they were new last year, it isn't really surprising they froze back to the ground. We had really early cold weather in late autumn. I am really far south (almost in Texas) and we hit very close to freezing (33 degrees) the first week in October when a lot of the plants were nowhere close to going into dormancy yet. Then we hit the teens in early November. If it got cold at your place early like it did at ours, your crape myrtles likely weren't ready for that early blast of cold.

Crape myrtles do a great job of coming back from freezing back to the ground and it doesn't affect their ultimate size, which is genetically determined.

Thanks Dawn, I was worried about them. We did have that early cold weather here in SW OKC. I will just let them continue to grow as they see fit!
