No one's gardened at this house for years at all, put in 3 six packs of salmon pink impatiens a month and a half ago and have had constant rain since then but they seem fine so far.

I'm game to try it again. I put in some new guineas last year and didn't like them near as much. For one thing, I found that they get stem rot really easily and also were often brittle. Larger branches many times simply broke off.

I have some I. walleriana seeds, but I'm going to give them over to one of the other gardeners in my high rise to try in one of the backyard flower beds. I don't know if the D.M. has gotten inside that area. In my front garden I may try some Balsam. I've never grown it before so it will be a nice change. I'll give it a shot of systemic fungicide before planting. When I did try some impatiens in 2013, they got the D.M. but it was in October, about time for them to die off anyway.

Last year I had I. walleriana volunteers, but they were crowded out to really do much. I don't think I'll be so lucky to have volunteers this time. There's one bank a few blocks over that always does walleriana impatiens. It will be interesting to see if they do it again. The D.M. seems to attack them around September (the last two years.)

It's only been three weeks and I was dodging the last frost average that runs around the third week of April in the Ga mountains.

Just put in some impatiens. The nursery said that there is definite improvement in the durability...hope so. You would think with today's technology it should be relatively easy to genetically change them so as to be immune to powdery mildew.

Still looking good around here. And they are planted in gardens that had the initial disease three years ago, Maybe they'll make it to frost, but this year I won't see it this year. Florida bound

When I had the Downy Mildew problem a couple years back, it didn't drastically affect the plants until late July. I saw people buying flats of impatiens at Costco this spring, but not me. Until I hear for sure they've made improvements, I won't waste my time and money.

I saved my own seeds last year and am having great success growing them this year. Seedlings are even coming up in several flower pots that contain some reused soil from winter sowing. A few of them are already blooming.

That's the trick donna. Don't buy at popular stores. I've seen some in my local Lowes that had obvious signs of the disease. So far so good with two flats from my in the boonies Tennessee source. Seeds? I'll have to try and collect some to take to Florida for the winter. Thanks for mentioning that!

Planted these Impatiens on May 3rd and smaller ones about 3 weeks later. So far so good. No Deer invasion and no Downey Mildew yet...

I've had a few affected by downey mildew. The cool rainy period kicked it off, but 3 out of 72 isn't bad.

Almost 10 days from last post. Still hanging in there..

Central nj lost plant to downy mildew a couple years ago. On a whim bought a pak of red this spring put half in ground and half in pot. Dry summer so plants in ground did not reach full potential but no downy mildew on any.
