Broadleaf spray will not kill Star of Bethlehem. It may yellow the top growth but will not kill the bulb. So far I have found no chemical which works on Star of Bethlehem. I have been hand weeding for three springs now. I bag and trash the dirt. Fourteen filled trash barrels the first year. This year only five, so I am making progress.

I'm so sorry I didn't listen 30+ years ago when I was told to get rid of them. The site was so shaded and sandy, there was little growing here so I was grateful to have anything! Alas. Now, with the soil improved, they are multiplying so quickly we cannot keep up with them with digging. If anyone has had success with other methods (without killing everything in sight ... though it is becoming tempting), I'd love to hear about it.

They do especially love that sandy shade! I am considering getting a propane weed blaster, turning over the clumps and blasting them. I read that composting them does not work because much higher heat is required to destroy the bulbs. From experience I can say that leaving the bulbs in water for months has no effect on them at all. They do not rot.

I do not think propane weed killer can do a thing. The bulbs are buried very deep.

I've just dug a entire trash bin full of them. I can dig another load. Thinking about exposing the bulbs to the winter weather and hope the cold can finally bust the bulbs, when above ground.

Anyone has experience?

I don't think they're sensitive to the cold, as I've found some surprisingly shallow ones looking healthy, despite the harsh winter we just had. How about putting them in a clear or black plastic bag and leaving it out in the sun to bake in the warm summer sun? I have a bucket full I've dug, will try to give that a try.

We finally broke down and got some glyphosate this spring, and the Star of Bethlehem just laughed through both applications. Repeated cutting back of the foliage doesn't seem to slow them down, which defies all logic (eventually the bulb has to starve, right?) When digging, it is important to try to get ~all~ the little bulblets in that clump, which is very difficult to do.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind these little spring flowers at all if they weren't so intent upon world domination.
