Will this work?

This is part of a larger build of a whole house and will be our master bath. The home will be in FL. We do use a tub which is why we are including it in our master bath. The downstairs of our home will be 1750 square feet with an additional 910 upstairs. Here is a link to the house plan.

House Plan

Notice I did change the direction of the toilet as suggested. The door to the toilet closet will be a swinging door that can swing in and/or out without a lock on it. We don't need the lock. We are not doing a pocket door because we need a place to hang towels and right now the only wall is on the outside wall of the toilet closet.

The problem I have is I don't have room to add any additional space because of zoning limits. I really don't want to reduce the living room as that is the room I intend to do the most entertaining in (and the pool area.)

Will the bath work?

Do you think the vanity top will interfere with the bath faucet fixtures?

    This will be fine.

Are you planning on a freestanding tub as drawn?

I'd change the toilet door to a pocket door. Much safer if anyone ever collapses in the bathroom....which happens more often than people realize, according to the forums.

The door swings both in and out so safety shouldn't be a problem (as it would be with a door that opens IN). I agree that reaching the tub faucet might be a little bit of a pain - Maybe turn the tub around, so the faucet is at the shower end? Won't the door to the bathroom and the swinging door to the toilet potentially interfere with each other?

I like it. Its a very efficient use of space.

If this is a freestanding tub, do you have a plan for cleaning the floor between the wall and tub especially below the window and at the faucet end of the tub?

Thank you everyone. I love these forums because it really helps me think out my decisions.

Palimpsest, yes this will be a free standing tub. I'm hoping to find one of those antique looking oval ones on a base.

Because I'm hoping for an oval tub I can put the faucet as you both have suggested at the shower end. Good call!

It is a concern of mine but I don't really know of another solution?

I imagine the best way would be to stand in the tub to clean around it.

How about a pocket door entering the BR (to prevent colliding doors)?

Yes, put tub faucet & water controls at the shower end.

mdln, Honestly I hate pocket doors so I'm thinking (right now but I may change my mind), that I'll take my chances with the two doors.

LOL, so did I (dislike pocket doors). Ironically, I ended up with one and it is not as bad as I thought. It is a great space saver.

mdln, could I see a picture of your pocket door?

We are in the final stages of a master bath remodel. I wanted to put in a freestanding tub until I climbed in one and thought about how challenging it would be to clean the floor between the wall and the tub or the wall close to the floor or paint the baseboard when it becomes necessary to do so. Maybe your arms are longer than mine or your tub less deep - personally that made the freestanding tub in a confined space a no-go for me.

Jlhug, definitely something to think about. Dang. I just love those tubs though. :)

Used a standard door knob set, which I really like. Yes, it prevents the door from fully retracting into the pocket, but it is well worth it to have a real door knob to open and close the door with. The knob is prevented from banging into the trim by a small rubber piece that is screwed into the bottom of the door.

The pocket door framing was put in by mistake and I decided to let it stay. Turns out to be a good mistake. While I still do not "love" pocket doors, in this case it was the best solution to the space.

    mdln,

That is a gorgeous door. I like the idea of using a regular handle instead of one of those things that seem to always break nails.

    daisychain01,

thank you for the info. More to keep in mind.

I put a pocket door into the master bath. Mine is very different than mdln's but I love it.

I know that those inset-in-tile-box tubs feel too 1980s at times, so why not look at some of the nicer alcove tubs? With their modern lines, they do not look like grandma's tub, and they eliminate the cleaning issue. There are some that even have a bowed front that look quite elegant.

If you are set on a slipper tub, here is a skirted one from Vintage Tub and Bath with cosmetic imperfections on sale for $900. I prefer buying scratch and dent things sometimes, it relieves me of perfectionism and worry over the first scratch on something new.

Your pocket door is gorgeous. I have decided to switch to a pocket door as I do believe it will help.

I would have no problems buying a scratch and dent. As you said, everything eventually gets a ding or two. Thank you.

Did not plan to make you a pocket door convert. :-)

Have been surprised by the number of my friends who say, "Oh, I just love pocket doors." They seem just as surprised when I tell them I do not.

I think it helps that the 5-panel door style matches all the other doors in the house. I love the glass in olychicks door and considered doing the same.

However, since this was my first real master bath, I wanted it to look like just another door. Still not sure I like having a bathroom in my bedroom. Seems too much like a hotel or hospital. JMHO

Hahaha mdln. Mine will open off the hallway of the master "suite". (Doesn't that sound fancy?) So like you, I'll do the same doors as the rest of the home and will put a door handle on. (We'll be doing handles as we're getting to that age where we need to start thinking how to make things more convenient for our later years.)
