Looking for some advice on kitchen countertop material.

We are at the exciting point in our barn conversion project when it comes to the pretty fixtures and fittings!

For the kitchen we will have a slate flag floor, an aga, raw wood units (lower only not wall). We will have a very big island a bit of worktop either side of the aga and by the sink.

Not looking for a pristine clinical look as it is a farmhouse, but definitely contemporary and fairly sleek, I don't want high maintenance. So what about slate? I have heard it marks really easily and looks shabby quite quickly, do you have any experience with this? an alternative could be zinc / concrete
