Coryanthus macrantha
Trinidad, French Guiana, Surinam, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Brazil in wet lowland rain forests is were this warm grower is found. This is the first Coryanthus that has ever bloomed for me and it lived up to it's reputation. The flower is absolutely bizarre. It has the bucket into which the insect falls and then as it clambers out picks up the pollen. It is called the bucket orchid, or monkey throat orchid. On the first of the photos the reflection of the pool of water in the bucket is noticeable. Smells of mint.
