Dwarf mondo or variegated liriope....advice needed

Hello I have a very steep hill just beyond the edge of my house that has a tree and some bushes on the hillside. The hillside is eroding away badly, and the tree that's on the hill has a lot of its roots showing cause the dirt keeps washing away every time it rains. we eventually want to put in retaining walls, but I can't stomach the $30,000 they quoted us for a multi tiered wall system. I thought for the time being I could put some plants under the tree to stabilize the soil and keep the dirt from washing away. I think I've narrowed it down to either Dwarf mondo or variegated liriope. The tree obviously provides shade, hence why no grass will grow under it. I don't want something that's invasive though. I want it to stay put for the most part. I personally think dwarf mondo may look tidier planted all around a tree, but I worry if it's invasive. what is my best option? I live in northern Mississippi. Thanks.
