Is this the basement you are referring to for flooring or are there two separate questions? One question for the basement and one for the kitchen?

There also is a flexible wood look vinyl flooring which is super good for basement floors. I have seen Scott MacGilivary use it many times in his Income Property HGTV shows.

Health concerns with engineered hardwood? Really? I'm pretty "up" on these things and I haven't heard about these issues. The "issues" are more from Lumber Liq. products (laminate flooring and bamboo) that have higher than allowed formaldehyde. Engineered hardwoods have some of the LEAST complaints when it comes to flooring products. It is true the "cheap" engineered hardwood can have formaldehyde adhesives, that is also the concern with most "cheap" flooring products.

In a basement, the "go to" flooring is a floating floor. Laminate fits the bill...except NOT in a kitchen. Engineered hardwood fits the bill in both kitchens and living areas.

Personally I would be more concerned for my health with laminate than with engineered hardwood. Engineered hardwood that states it is made in the USA, will always be a healthier bet than most laminates.

I have heard of health issue with laminate but not engineered wood. Real is always better than fake anyday. Engineered is real wood.

Ask where it was made. USA, Canada, Germany, France, Switzerland = very good = more expensive. China = possible problems.
