You might want to consider adding more moisture. Unless those were some pretty high winds (and I know Chicago IS the Windy City and all :)) it's kind of unusual for a full, moist jug to get blown over.

I've had jugs get knocked over before (usually by me being clumsy!) and I've just righted them, patted down the soil the best I could and left them, and for the most part things have still germinated and grown.

Thanks! This is my first time doing any of this. I have seen that there is condensation in the jug, so I thought that meant there was enough moisture. Do you think I should still add more? I should note that I am just using a half-gallon jug for this, not a full gallon.

If you have condensation, you have enough moisture. If you have more than one milk jug, you can tie them together to prevent blowing and tipping. Or tie them to a railing, or put them between two bricks. It's hard to give suggestions without knowing what your setting is like. Good luck.

Yes, condensation usually means your jugs are moist enough. And half gallon jugs are a bit lighter and taller (relative to their footprint) than gallon jugs, so that could be why it was blown over. (I've had this problem with 2-liter soda bottles till I thought of just shortening the body of them.) Ditto what Martha said - tying it to another jug or anchoring with a rock, brick, or against a wall will help.

Great--thanks. I have them on my deck now, so I'll tie them to the railing.

or put them in a box - the old milk crates are good for this, I think they still sell something similar in the box stores.
