In Phoenix it's almost guaranteed that you will get BER at least part of the time.

I gave up on Roma types because I cannot grow them without lots of BER. Grrrrr. But Marianne's Peace is one of my favorite tomatoes and I've successfully grown that one without BER. It's not a Roma but a large slicer. Did you get your first MP from me perhaps ernie??

Mary, I didn't get MP from you. I have a little packet of seeds I bought on ebay during one of my seed sprees. The silvery fir tree and Early wonders that are in the ground are BER-free.

Silvery Fir Tree is one of my favs and that baby is putting out lots of fruit right now. Unfortunately, I only have one plant. Must have run out of seeds. But I have several starts of Flamenco, a cross between SFT and Floridade. Someone here mentioned it. You? I am anxious to see how it does. I'll be planting 2 or 3 this weekend - a tad late but I learned of 'em late!

I grow peppers in pots and have the same issues for any new plants. My issue is definitely a lack of calcium even though I use very hard water (before it gets to the softener). I also buy fertilizer with calcium, and while that helps a little it does not eliminate BER. However, the Peppers I put in pots last year do not have BER. Last year, I would wash and dry any eggshells I had and then grind them into a powder using a mortar and pestle. I added that to the pepper plants last year but they still had BER. So I did not do that for this year's plants. However last year's peppers survived and they don't have BER this year. So looking online it looks like it takes a while for even ground down eggshells to release their calcium, so the ground eggshells I used last year is starting to have its desired effect. So I will go back to using ground eggshells in this years plants so they won't have BER next year (its a good thing this is AZ and the peppers have no problems surviving the winters). However for this year I will need something that release calcium much quicker so I guess I will end up buying some epsom salt for that purpose.

Hey. It's contagious. The toms didn't have it until I read this. Now I have blossom end rot on some of the Roma tomatoes. I read the link and have no idea how to fix. I'm keeping it consistently moist. Noticed the issue after the rain so maybe to much water affected it's ability to get the calcium.

I planted five "B Boy" ("B" for Better? Big? Bogus?) plants. Four went into an old bed and didn't have one single BER fruit. One went into a bed new this year and every single stunted tomato on that plant had BER (Pic) and the plant got itself pulled. It had small-ish roots compared to most.

What's the difference? Besides age, the "happy" bed was my garbage trench for three or four months over Winter. All the garbage, including egg shells halves, none of which exist any more. The unhappy bed, floored with quarry sand, hasn't had a single amendment other than six to eight inches of old horse manure. The water is the same drip circuit. The sun/heat/timing/mulching is about the same. Maybe it's a freak plant? NAAH... It has to be the garbage's nutrients. Can't reckon any other cause.
