I haven't been able to ID my tree yet, but I was thinking about this. What else besides cold weather would cause fig tree branches to die like this? We've had the tree nearly 20 years, and IIRC this has never happened before. I think this is the first time we've had temperatures this cold two years in a row as well. We normally don't get below about 10 degrees.

Incidentally, I've also ordered an "LSU Purple" fig tree, which the nursery said is pretty cold-hardy.

I haven't done very much research on fig trees yet, since we haven't even put ours in the ground yet. However, what I know about fruit trees in general, I would be looking for insect damage or fungal infections. Are you able to get a picture of the tree. That might help more experienced people on here get an idea of what you are dealing with. Hopefully someone can give you a little more insight into it. Sorry I'm not very much help.
