Rotting cutting

I have resisted checking on my two cuttings until today, and I think this has not worked in my favor. My dwarf SIngapore Pink cutting appears to have rotted quite a bit.

I cut it back until I saw no more rotting, and only green. And just for safe measure took off a tad bit more just to be safe. Which leaves me with this small piece, oh, about 3-4in long.

I am new to this, so not sure if such a short piece is even going to still work. From the time it was cut/processed and sent to me, till I planted it and now a few weeks later trying to rescue it, it's a bit shriveled. I understand to let the cut end dry out now a bit.

Has anyone ever tried such a rescue like this before? Any tips/hints/words of wisdom/Just give up ha?..

The pudica cutting seems to be doing just fine. The little leaves at the tip are green and healthy looking instead of turning black like the Singapore dwarf. So far I have resisted the urge to pull it out.

I cut the inflo off despite obviously wanting to keep it around. Figured it would be easier to root without that added stress of producing flowers.

Ah, dang it, sorry that happened to you :( I would say it's almost always worth a try. You never know what can happen. It may be a long shot but it depends on your patience. I reached a giving up point with a few cuttings recently - figured I had enough and was ready to move on LOL!

I think the key is to get a great callus on it before planting it again. The callus, the moisture in the container and the heat are the most important things in rooting so those will give you the best shot in success and to figure out what might have gone wrong with this one.

I would give it a try, I never give up until the whole thing is rotting. On your second one I would cut all of the brown pieces off near the top. Barb

The learning curve can be harsh...trust me! But please don't give up! Dsp is notoriously difficult to root without prior experience..I have never rooted pudica so I can't speak on that one. With what you have left, you can try to water root, I have more luck with short green cuttings when I water root then move to moist coir to bag root. Can you give a summary of your rooting process so we can help further?

I think lack of heat is a large part of it. It's been a bit cool until this week, especially at nights. Somehow I was ignorant of that requirement...so I keep moving the pudica to the warmest spots I can find now! Doh...

Anyways, my method was coir with some growstone (recycled glass, is much like perlite) a touch of organic potting soil in a plastic container. Moistened with clonex solution. Made sure the ends were hard and calloused over.

I am thinking of trying the willow water rooting hormone method with what's left of DSP. Willow has, besides rooting hormone, salicylic acid in it; which is supposed to be anti fungal/bacterial etc. Just have to figure out how to not look suspicious cutting willow branches at the park haha.

There's a water rooting method? That could go hand in hand with willow water...I'd just really hate to loose something I spent monies on! Not that I haven't killed my fair share of orchids amongst other things. Although if DSP is notoriously difficult, then maybe I don't feel soooo bad. But still.

I do have a keiki/miniature lavender cutting that is shipping to me already rooted. My one free pass haha!

Here's my Keiki cutting. It has an inflo visible, and I think I spy another pushing in on another one of the tips. But it doesn't have a lot of roots though. Should I just stick it in growing medium? Or a little water rooting?

Hi, If that was my Keiki cutting with that many roots I would plant it and treat it like a regular plant which it is now. Put it in the sun and enjoy. Barb
