Where to Find Good Fig Tree

I am interested in planting a fig tree out on my land which is about 1 hour Northeast of Dallas. I am wanting a variety that grows well in my region and requires little to no maintenance to produce edible fruit. I also don't want to wait 5 or 10 years to start getting fruit, so if there are varieties that produce earlier I'd prefer those.

1. What varieties should I be looking at?

2. Where should I look for the tree once I choose a variety? Are nurseries a good place or are their stock not reliable?

BTW, I have never grown anything before which is probably evident by newbie questions above :)

Do you get snow? Figs don't like to freeze. If you get snow, be prepared for your fig to die back each year. After a while it might just get used to life with snow. Figs will gift you fruit year one. Stay away from anything called Brown Turkey. Do you like green figs with red insides, Gold figs with brown insides, Dark figs with red insides? There are 700+ varieties. The best place to buy them would be your local nurseries or Big Box stores, but they sometimes get mislabeled.

Hardy chicago can take some real cold. If killed back to the ground they will come out next spring and set figs on the new green shoots and produce till first frost. They taste great. I grow them in Cincinnati OH. You will have a lot less cold and a much longer growing sea.

She is ready to plant outside and is now 8 months old from a 1.5 inch cutting

Thank you both for the replies.

We get snow a couple times per year. I had no idea that figs were so intolerant to cold.

Based on some of the postings, I was under the assumption that Brown Turkey was one of the more popular here in Texas. Can I ask why you recommend against it?

Both the hardy Chicago and brown turkey will go down to 10F and come out next spring. At these temperature the breba crop buds are killed and the main crop of the hardy chicago comes out about 2 months earlier than the EBT fig. The EBT is not known for flavor.

In your area I would think that 10F is very rare but you will still need a resilient fig.

Brandon, the Brown Turkey has a bad reputation among fig connoisseurs as an insipid tasting fig. There are others so much better, it's not the fave of many.

Here in Southern California we have the perfect climate (Mediterranean) for figs. Dry Summer Heat and mild winters. So many great varieties grow here, and fig trees are big, we choose only the best. Some are hard to find commercially. Most garden centers will have BT or Hardy Chicago. Sometimes other varieties will pop up. The good ones are treasured by fig lovers and cuttings passed between them.

Brown Turkey is one the most widely grown and good tasting figs that are grown in the southern part of the US. There are many different strains of Brown Turkey and the overwhelming majority of them are fine tasting figs.

Just for sharing, in my country (Indonesia) every figs can grow healthy but a lot of them are Green Jordan, Brown Turkey, Red Israel and Conadria. As i know, figs are strong plant. I can plant in by cutting (after 4 days the root are grow).

But, it must be different with your country. Some of people in US or EU, put their figs in Pot so they can move it easily when the snow are coming. And i think its less then a year to make some fruits (according to my experiment, the new cutting bring some new fruit on their new leaf). Thanks
