Window covering inspiration

I need help figuring out how to cover this window. Need a 'black-out' option but something that will get us out of the brown blah doldrums. I need to inject some pattern and color in our room. I also need coverings for other windows but this one is awkward above the bed. Open to any ideas! Thanks.

With the casement window and bed underneath, there are not a lot of attractive options. Maybe put a shade on the outside?

possibly rollerblinds, there are lots of options for different patterns, even for the black-out ones..

Yes, I like the blinds, set inside the frames. You could use a contrast accent colour -- coral? (depends on the rest of the room) -- or look for a patterned fabric that uses your wall green and brings in another colour.

It doesn't look like you could have the roller blinds inside the frames because of how its trimmed and and the cranks sticking out.

good point,suzyq53,not sure how the blinds are fixed...

Mia - I was thinking about that too and it looks great. But need to remove trim or trim flat on the top of the window. It sticks out too far. The blinds need to be installed much higher than the window top. And the curtains need to be even higher.

Suzyq, I agree, good point. But I think it may be possible, if they lie inside the crank at the bottom side, just hugging the bottom of the window -- if so, that would help stop a lot of light bleeding in through the bottom. Worth checking?

Mia, for curtains I'm a bit concerned that the gorgeous moulding at the top of the window is quite deep. The curtains would have to be hung fairly far from the wall to hang straight. Also, could be done.

I thought that too Rina, but was hoping for hardware solution!

Blackout cellular shades would be unobtrusive.

Yep mia, I think you'd need to attach a box up high for the blind and curtains to hang from and you'd need blackout blinds and blackout curtains because the blinds will gap at the sides.

    Shutters!

I priced out cellular blinds (would attach inside the molding - would have to be 3 separate shades). I am debating doing that since it is least obtrusive and shows the molding. Then Maybe cover the lamp shades in a bright fabric to add color that will coordinate with the other windows. Thoughts?

The other option I was considering is a roman style shade in a pretty fabric.

I would suggest installing a single shade below the molding, as you will only use the shade before you go to sleep and raise it when you wake up.

I think that a Roman Shade with a light cream / natural color will look lovely! and when you raise it, it will create a decorative valance under the molding.

I agree with the shade idea as pictured above but I would also consider adding stationary drapery on the sides to tickle the edge of the window on each side and from as high as possible. This would help to soften the edges plus, if blackout lined, would help with any light seepage that may happen on the sides of the Roman blind. That way you can combine pattern with solid and bring in some colour.

I agree with Shades by Design and Mayfield Drapery Works Ltd.

Pic submitted for visual and you could coordinate with the other window/s in the room

I don't think a roman shade will look right on that size window under the molding. What is the height of that space? It looks to be about 24". Even with the shade fully raised, very little window would show. Plus it will look odd to have molding sticking up above the shade.

We have a similar situation---3 windows above the headboard with crank out windows. We put in 3 honeycomb pull down shades; all 3 are blackout honeycombs. Curtains dress the sides of the other windows; a bow window with blackout honeycombs. Have never regretted that decision. The honeycombs fit 'inside' the window moldings; when raised, you never see them. The honeycomb shades are the same color as the woodwork.

Your windows have such beautiful moulding, I think plantation shutters would enhance the look very much. They are not however blackout. Not sure if you open those windows often but you could remove the hand cranks. Look on Houzz to see how this will look. If not there are many beautiful shade options. Coulise, Phifer, and Mermet to name a few. You might want to consider a reverse roll installation for a cleaner, less obvious look. Hope this helps

I,m sorry, forgot to note; inside mount , 3 separate shades.

Inside mount romans with blackout lining, coordinating bed runner and pillows. You need larger lamps. (Oops, just noticed they're sconces.)

If you like one of the options suggested but the crank is in the way that can be changed. Most manufactures of casement windows have optional handles for opening the window that can be purchased through your local distributor.
