We use 1/2 gallon emitters on our potted figs (5 gallon black nursery pots) every other day for 45 minutes. Most of our trees are in ground on 1-2 gallon emitters watered on the same schedule as above. Our water is hard, so we check for clogged emitters often. Our pots all have well drained soil.
We used to water every day, but in California's drought, we got our county mandate to only water certain days depending on address. The trees seem fine with less water, but figs are drought resistant anyway.

Thanks for your answer, sounds like drip is the way to go. I am in a much wetter and cooler climate, so the watering rate will be nowhere near that. Last summer, I was able to run my system on captured rain water for all but seven days.

On the other hand, still have not reached our final frost date here
