pruning a hydrangea with a lawn mower

My son bought a cottage three years ago, and with it came some great hydrangeas. I think they are incrediballs, but not sure. For two years he mowed them down in the fall, and they came back beautifully. Last fall he didn't get around to mowing them. He will be at his cottage this weekend and will probably mow them again unless I tell him not to. I checked them a few days ago and they are full of new leaves coming on the tall stems. If they are incrediballs, they advise you to cut back to about 12". Do you think he should do that, just leave them alone, or do his mowing, which has worked so well in the past when done it in the Fall?
