Exterior Paint, Cape Cod house

I want to paint my house, but I'm struggling with finding the "right"color. I've considered white, gray, and yellow; leaning toward a saturated yellow, painting the shutters and doghouse dormers a mid tone grey. I would welcome other ideas, though. my co-workers were appalled that I want a yellow house! more than one said they bought yellow houses and immediately repainted and the neighbors thanked them! so..keep in mind, I live in the Atlanta, GA area, the soil is red clay. ,please take a look and advise with color scheme.

if you look carefully, you can see a patch of test paint on the front, to the left of the door. it's a Benjamin Moore color "Crowne Hill yellow."

Have you ever driven past a house and said, "Gee, they must have gotten a bargain on that paint!"? That's what I'd say if you use that neon yellow. Its a cape - paint it white with navy shutters and a red door. Or if you're really sold on the yellow, paint the door that color. A door is no trouble to paint again. However, that said, you need to remove the shutters at the door, and install real functioning ones at the windows. Here's an article about shutters.

Check out Benjamin Moore' s moonlight yellow and moonlight white for trim. It's a nice yellow that is pale without being washed out- not too sunny yellow like in picture two or too gold in the third picture. The last picture is my house with BM moonlight. Smile. I like first picture's yellow too.

I do not need real functioning shutters, I live inland and they aren't a necessity. it's not in the budget to go in that direction. I am disinclined to paint the house white because the dust is red clay and it's absolutely an eyesore, I'd be washing the siding every weekend. I think it would look boring AND dirty, lol. But thank you for your advice.

I've felt since moving to Atlanta (from Phoenix), the light here is very different from what I'm used to. I t also rains a LOT here, so it's very important that I have an uplifting home to return to at the end of the day. I like gray but every house I've seen in this area that's been gray looks wrong to my eye. My lot and surrounding neighborhood is heavily wooded, also. You can't see all the trees to the left of the house and behind it due to the slope it's built on.

Your gut is telling you yellow. Grab a Ben Moore color wheel. Take it home and narrow down to a few yellow. Paint samples on poster board. Put them on porch, on another side of house. See what you like. Yellow is tricky. So don't jump the gun until you are sure!

I agree, Mia! Yellow is very tricky to get right. I'm going to take your advice. I'm also liking Ashley's photo shop, though. if I can find the right grays, it might look very nice. Maybe with a yellow door, lol. But gray is tricky too! Asi just discovered after spending $300 on paint for muy bathroom, which I was sure was perfect. I did all the steps...sample paints, primer, checked in various lights...but all the same, I now have a lovely lavender (not gray, as I had planned) bathroom. :(

I'm assuming you don't like the current yellow? Have you considered just painting the green things? Maybe a color you do like, like the midtone grey you talked about?

that's a good idea, too. the current color is a washed out faded cream, sort of yellow. it does need to be painted but it could wait a while. it would certainly save me some money to paint the green parts first!
