Your cutting will be fine. It will grow into a fruiting tree maybe this year. Are you planting it in ground? You are in a fig thriving zone! If you want a big tree, remove or air layer the suckers, so you have one nice trunk with a leafy canopy. Some varieties grow bigger and faster than others. I am in your same zone without the 10, but in ground I have many varieties. Most are 3-5 years old. Amazes me the girth of some trunks and the vigor with which they grow. Others just hang in there growing slowly.

Suzi, thank you for the information. For now the fig will stay in a container. It is still very small about 6 inches but with several healthy leaves. I do not know the variety of fig this is but I do know the fruit is quite small and purple when ripe and the inside is pink if I remember correctly, very juicy compared to some figs I've tried that taste rather dry. The mature tree is on the small side as well. Honestly, I'm not sure of my zone since it seems to vary depending on what chart I'm looking at. I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area...

Maybe your soil combination, but like Mrs. Suzy said : it will be fine. I use some compost combination without ground soil (just leaf compost and sheep compost *correct me if i'm wrong) and its totally fine. Maybe because i'm living in tropical weather (Indonesia).

U should add some pic so we can help what kind of yours, many figs fruit are purple (Purple Jordan, Red Israel, Abicou, sulthane, etc)
