Hummingbird Garden

Yellow flowers on feeder

I've got one of the feeders with yellow flowers on the ports, which I'm told attract yellowjackets. Apparently you can buy red ones to replace, but I wonder if they really serve any purpose. Will the hummers find the ports if I just remove the yellow flowers? I haven't had any report to the feeder yet, or else I'd just experiment and see.

just remove the yellow flowers if you are having issues with wasps or yellow jackets. Hummers don't need them to find the ports.

Sometimes orioles, woodpeckers or other species enjoy lapping up some sugar water. Without the flowers, the hole is larger. The larger birds can really make a mess spilling sugar water on a patio!

Thanks, I guess I'll leave the flowers until and unless I have a problem with wasps. None yet. Probably should shop more carefully next time, but I was impatient!
