Blanca, admittedly, I mistakenly was comparing the stock TIneke Verburg photo to mine!! ARGH, your bloom could be an "off" Tineke Verburg, as it sure doesn't look like the others.

No worries! I think that the flowers produced by this latest mystery bulb are closest to 'Tineke Verburg,' but the petals are sharply pointed. In addition, I've never seen 'Tineke Verburg' in person. I will continue to investigate before labeling its tag with my permanent paint pen. :-)

I wrote to Paul and Daphne to see if they are able to provide a definitive ID.

Ok, you two are the specialists in id-ing plants so I'll go with what you say, but I don't see the resemblance between Blanca's flower and Tineke Verburg. Blanca's flower has pointed leaves and Tineke Verburg are more rounded. Although the flower petals can open pointed and soften somewhat over days, this would have to get a lot more rounded. Also, Blanca's flower has petals that are mostly the same size while Tineke Verburg's bottom petals are somewhat larger than the top. As for the color, I don't pay much attention when we get into the orange/red pics as they are difficult to get a true representation of he color, but the shape differences has me baffled So professors, help me here:)

This is still a mystery bulb with no definitive ID. Frankly, I have no idea what the identity of this bulb could be. Since the bulb came from Royal Colors, I was comparing it to photos of the bulbs they offered this season in the red to orange color range. Not a very scientific way to go about things.

What I was trying to express is that, of the three bulbs offered by RC, 'Tineke Verburg' appears to come "the closest." As I said, I've never seen that cultivar (or the others) in flower. The sharply pointed petals, which I noted, have me baffled too. Hopefully, Paul and Daphne will be able to help.

This looks very close to what I received for Jewel of the Night. I just call it unknown red from RC.

The color of my photo of Tineke Verburg bloom is true (golden) in good light. Otherwise, it is red-orange. As noted previously, I looked at Blanca's bloom, then scrolled down and was (sadly) comparing my bloom to the stock photo...so of course it looked the same!! I do see many similarities between Blanca's bloom and Tineke Verburg, so I wouldn't rule it out!

I also received some mislabeled 'Jewel of the Night' bulbs, but they produced smallish yellow flowers that withered without fully opening. I tried my best (without success) to capture a photo of the flowers produced by the bulbs I received, which I think are truly 'Jewel of the Night,' or whatever its proper name may be.

In comparison to my mystery bulb with the distinctly pointed petals, the red flowers labeled 'Jewel of the Night' are smaller and the shape is significantly different. They also produce prodigious amounts of pollen, which soon falls onto the lower petals and becomes very messy.

I apologize for the poor quality of the photos. The flower is actually much darker than photo #1, and more like photo #2. However, in photo #2, the details are lost in an attempt to document the near black color accurately.

I decided to add a shot of dried 'Jewel of the Night' flowers in another attempt to show the true color. The pods developed with no help from me.

I think what you have is the real Jewel of the Night. I bought four unnamed bulbs last year from a local nursery that look just exactly like that and I an calling them Jewel of the Night. Your right they produce a heavy amount of yellow pollen. They all produced two or more scapes. This year only one of them bloomed. Maybe they are resting after producing so many blooms last year.

I'm not familiar with that variety.

The above is in reference to the first photos of the red-orange flowers with pointed petals (not the three photos of 'Jewel of the Night').

It sounds like the Amaryllis Parade at Keukenhof is very exciting!

I think what Maas's sold was either Black Pearl or Benfica. Recall I got talked into buying one for someone on the list, who then passed on the offer, so I got stuck with it. Mine just bloomed with huge red/black blooms. I was under the impression that Jewel of the Night was a smaller bloom.

All of mine had 3 inch blooms and look exactly like those reported to be Jewel of the Night. Even emaryllis.com has a picture of it. If they were larger I would agree with you.
