Mystery Plant - Help Identify

Two of these plants sprouted up in our yard and we cannot identify them. I've been doing tons of research, but to no avail. They are currently about a foot and a half tall, with long shiny leaves and a reddish-brown/burgundy stem and undersides of leaves. (Attached is a photo of just "one" plant and the other one is about two feet over.) I assumed they were weeds because they grew pretty fast. They seem to have buds on the top but nothing has bloomed yet. Thanks!

They look to be of the single variety. Are they blooming now? I cut my first ones this week to save them from the rain storms.

I can't speak for cmichel4, but mine are far from blooming, thank goodness as we're expecting severe weather over the next couple of days.

The single variety bloom weeks before the typical peony. Mine are deep red and beautiful right now. The weather is why I brought them in. They smell so heavenly!!

Oh yes! I had one of that variety at my last home, 10 plus years ago. Thanks for jogging my memory - it needs jogging. :)

As I recall, it was quite the pricey plant at 50 dollars or more. My neighbor was the beneficiary of that lovely. IIRC the foliage was finer, more fern like?

The expensive one with the fine ferny foliage is called a fern leaved peony. Yours is a regular early single bloom peony. I have the dark red/burgundy 'Early Scout'.
