Very little bit of room between the fridge and the living room- notice that's about 3-4 tiles wide!

well, so how about an area rug on the border for your table to sit on, between worlds.

@ nnigrt, I have had the same thought and once we move in, I should be able to see if that's feasible! It would have to come into the kitchen some unfortunately..

My first thought was a drop leaf table...maybe with a bench for two against the wall and then you use the two chairs in the living area during the day...

I would go with the drop leaf table. They are great space savers. If it must extend into the living area somewhat get an indoor/outdoor rug to place under it. Good luck in the new space.

With this option is multifunctional for storage, extra counter space for prepping/cooking, etc. With not knowing the actual measurements, not sure how big or small of an island you would need. Hope this helps!

One other thought...but it isn't great for family dinners...you could use a long console table that is open underneath as bar style seating. It would work in the space but with a second child on the way I'm not sure it would work well for you.

Wish I could find a better picture but you get the idea...maybe with an open bench on one side? I was picturing a much longer console.

Thank you all, we had also considered the drop-leaf tables as an option. We saw one that had double drop leaves and the table could be a narrow console style table against the wall outside of meal-times. Once we've moved in, it's likely we'll go with one of your above suggestions! Thanks again.

what is on the wall opposite the kitchen. currently you have the sofa facing the toward the wall, could the tv go at the other end of the room and float the sofa? leaving more room for a table behind?
