Lets Dance or Big Easy

What is the difference in these two hydrangeas?

Let's Dance is the marketing name for a series of reblooming hydrangeas, of which 'Big Easy' is one selection. Sort of like the Endless Summer series, of which 'The Original' (what most folks incorrectly refer to as Endless Summer) is one selection.

The official name is Let's Dance® Big Easy.

Yeah, there is no Let's Dance "original". All have a suffix. As for Big Easy, I've had one for a few years already. Overall it's not impressive in the least. Always dies back to 3-4" in winter. Although it has ES Original in the lineage, it doesn't grow as large as ES or put out as many blooms. It's distinguishing feature, in my opinion, is putting out apricot-colored blooms in alkaline soil. Not many can do this. Properly sited, the unique color would make it a decent accent plant. But in a large open bed, it kind of gets lost.

My new LD Rhapsody Blue is coming back awesome this season in year 2. It's feature is deeply colored blooms. If you want one though, Proven Winners has changed the name to I forget what (consult the "2015 cultivars" thread).

Ok so what's is the difference between Moonlight-Robert and Big Easy-Betner?

    sorry Brener

Primarily flowering coloring. 'Berner' will hold the pink/coral tones well regardless of pH (although could take on some purplish hues in high acidic soils). 'Robert' is more sensitive to pH and will produce blue flowers in acidic conditions.

Both are quite compact, small plants.

Let's Dance Rhapsody Blue is now LD Rhythmic Blue - 'ES14'. http://www.midwestgroundcovers.com/plant/Hydrangea-macrophylla-ES14

Wonder why the name change so soon after its introduction? Confusing enough keeping the various growers' names/trademarks/cultivars straight.

Did yours overwinter old wood, Springwood? What, if anything, did you & Hokierusty supply in the way of Winter protection? Will keep an eye out for this one.

I had a small pile of maple leaves on my RB, and a small amount of old wood survived up to 6-8". Nonetheless, the biggest broccoli-stage blooms are on completely new wood. The bloom size isn't advertised as very large, but we shall see - last year from the nursery the blooms were like 4-6" in diameter. There are about 6 new big canes that will bloom. The exact cane-height and bloom size will be determined (they're both usually an energy trade-off). But I will post back with pictures later in this or a similar thread.

With application #1 of 10-10-10 granules, regular watering, and some rain, it's really taking off now. Old wood buds have been slow to start on all plants because the canes were freeze-damaged pretty good. In some cases, the bud survived but the cane didn't! And that is noted by a bud that breaks dormancy and greens up, but then abruptly turns brown and falls off once no more nutrients are provided.
