You're right. AstroTurf was kind of a ridiculous suggestion...although...modern, realistic-looking synthetic turf is starting to become popular in the drought-stricken Southwest. But now I have a better suggestion...

She should look for a native seed mix: Little Bluestem and Buffalo Grass and stuff like that. It may not look or feel quite like St. Augustine, but it will require less water, reduce erosion, compete less with native trees and shrubs, and will improve the soil chemistry, microorganisms, and beneficial insects that are so critical for our endangered wildlife. Ideally, she would mow it once a year or so, but even if she mows it every couple weeks, it's a step in the right direction and away from the environmental calamity that is the American turf grass lawn.
