I was trying to cut a branch of a shrub that was poking me. I won't say where i was getting poked but it was behind me. lol Reached back with my bypass pruner and squeezed to cut - and I squeezed until my hand hurt and hardly dented the branch. Pruner was pretty sharp - but my hand - slightly arthritic and not terribly strong - could not cut the branch. OOPS - time to find a new solution! Off to the nursery where I found a ratchet pruner, brought it home and it cut the offending branch like butter. What a discovery! Next I replaced my loppers with a ratchet type that takes small bites out of big branches. These tools can add from 2 to 9 times the strength in your hands or arms.
Not only can I easily cut and prune - it is easy to cut up the branches so many will fit in the garden trash barrel.
Since I have found ratchet pruners in Big Lots, and other discount stores and have several including one in the kitchen. I still like to cut up my chickens instead of buying them ready cut and the ratchet pruner makes that job quick, easy and safe. A swish in hot soapy water and they are ready for next chore.
