Lawn replacement

I live in northern BC so my options are limited. What do you think of replacing my northeast lawn with Junipers? I would put in some paths, a few spots for potted annuals, but mostly junipers. I don't really want to use bark or gravel, not sure what other options are available.

In addition to junipers what other shrubs might work either alone or in combination?

I plan to be in this home for the next 15/20 years, other than being a detriment to resale do you see any longterm problems with this idea?

The primary reason for doing this is to reduce time spent on mowing lawn. we don't use this lawn, it is just a time consuming area.

thx :)
