It all depends on the scope of work. Most designers we've spoken to will offer a one time fee for "full service" design work on larger and/or more intricate projects by estimating the amount of time they believe the project will take. The one time design fees we were quoted for a great room and breakfast nook project ranged from $5k to $7k. That was in addition to the cost of furniture and accessories, etc.

For just basic or general consultations and/or for smaller projects, most designers we talked to will charge an hourly fee. Most quotes we were given ranged from $100 to $175 per hour.

Then there is also e-design services that some design firms offer. This service is a good option and allows you to work with a designer or firm that is out of your area...which can broaden your choices. We found some that offered this and some will even advertise it on their website with their e-design fees listed (on a per room basis).

Oh just to add.....there was one designer we almost decided to work with (looking back, wish we had now) that didn't charge a fee per se for a full service design project......but a minimum purchase amount of furniture and accessories had to be committed upon in the contract based on what they estimated was needed to complete the project. The furniture and accessories mark-ups basically covered their fees.

I charge an hourly rate for just helping to pull a space together with furniture , colors accessories but I have a different pricing schedule if this is a full blown reno, Sometime for someone just needing some help find a store where you like the furniture and use their in- house design desvice.

And yes, check out the local stores, not just the chains but smaller boutiques, if they don't offer design services, they can recommend someone.
