carex morrowii aurea-variegata conditions?

I bought a variegated Japanese carex by mistake (meant to get hakone macra). I can't return it, so I would like to find out how best to treat it. According to the web, it needs a lot of water. One reference said not to let it dry out between waterings. Is this true? I found one person who said it could withstand some drought. Can anyone please tell me their experience?

I wanted to put it into a semi-shaded area which faces northeast. It gets about 2 hours of morning sun, then is shaded for the rest of the day. I live in New Mexico with annual rainfall of under 10". I expect to irrigate, but if this carex needs to be constantly moist, I'll have to try it in a container, it won't survive our dry climate.

Thanks,

Cheryl
