As long as the peony roots have not rotted away, the only thing you need is patience... Hard to find sometimes. Good luck with them. What varieties did you plant?

Emile Debatene and Dr Alex Fleming. They didn't look so good coming out of the packages (from Lowes). I'm hoping that they're putting out roots instead of rotting in the pots. Will order from better sources next time. :)

How often do you water Peonies in the Spring season? Does the soil need to stay moist for bareroots?

I'm far from being an expert at growing Peonies, Your plant is too fuzzy looking to be a peony. Most of the ones I grow always come up with a red color to the new plant. My Peonies are growing in leaf litter and stay damp most of the time, when is starts to get warmer I water more and keep them on the damp side, so far I've only lost one and I think it was due to having a bad root cutting. 90% of my peonies are noid because most of them came from a every old garden that was being removed to build a new home.

I have started a lot of peonies from the bare roots available from Lowes or Home Depot, or even Costco. You have them in a pot for the first year to grow some root for planting in the garden in the fall, thats what I do too. Keep the pots out of the full sun as the soil in the pots over heats. Thanks Al. Very helpful to know. :) How much direct sun do your peonies get where they're planted? It's quite hot in the Summer in the bay area. I would plant them shallowly as suggested.

Calistoga is the hot end of the Napa Valley, but I live up in the hills on the west side of the valley. On the north side of a mountain, garden cut out of the woods, we don't really have any area that would get 100% all day sun, but mine are planted where I get the most sun. Tree peonies are in shade from the western sun. In all cases consistent water is important, mine is on a drip system. Al
