pendants will just obstruct the view of the tv when standing, the beautiful view outside... and you have great cieling beams. you don't need pendants. people are over killing the pendant idea. this space doesn't call for it.

Good points- but still need some kind of lighting over the table, and if I mount a small fixture on the beam that angles light toward the table, it will shine in your eyes. Any suggestion for a different fixture?

get one with an angle cut collar that will only let the light go where it needs. mount one to the side of the beam and angle it down.
but, the real question is what lighting do you use now?

I have a trac light on the"kitchen" side of the beam which currently provides light on the bar height counter, but with the switch to a banquette and table it is too far from the beam (27") to have a light shine down onto the table

This is the trac light on the other side. The one spot is angled to project light out 2 feet, which is why an angle cut would be necessary. it just seems very utilitarian to have a trac on both sides of the island and I guess I have "pendant envy" but can see now that hanging lights will block view. Thanks for your perspective. Do you think an LED gooseneck wall scones mounted to the beam would work?

yes, or you could to off the top of the beam and do goose necks on both sides.. for balance.

i see you have recessed can up there, you could put an eyeball and narrow beam on that maybe too

We have vaulted ceilings and installed cable lighting that spans the distance. Clean, unobtrusive, with various types of fixtures, including pendants, that can mount anywhere on the cables that provide the power. Look on Houzz for Kable Lights. Good luck.
