I'd have to see the tree to know for sure - where the graft is located and whether it is staked and how it has been trained.

Laceleaf dissectums like Red Select can be extremely variable in height. If a low graft tree, they tend never to get very tall, remaining a short umbrella or mushroom shaped shrub. If with a higher graft and staked to assume a more vertical habit, they can get as tall as the staking/training allows. But you don't often see them much above 6-8 feet.

Regardless, it's not going to put out a lot of growth this season. Most JM's are pretty slow growers.

That depends on how tall you want it to get. If you want a taller tree, you will need to keep the stake in place and affix the primary stem to it as it grows.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure I would put a lot of faith in Walmart's ability to provide accurately named cultivars. Even at a very young age, weeping dissectums will display the lateral branching that is characteristic of their growth habit and your little guy looks suspiciously too upright and with no branching to speak of. In short, except for the foliage, this doesn't look all that much like a Red Select.

It's a tree with interesting foliage, so well worth keeping, but yes-- when you buy a JM from a big-box store, the name you "know" it as should always have an asterisk by it. You'll never be truly sure.

Case in point... I bought a dissectum at Home Depot last year with three tags (!) on it saying it was Tamukeyama. I raced it out of the store. Why? Because I noticed the foliage looked nothing like a Tamukeyama, and when I went to pick up the pot the grower's pot was inside with a clearly labeled "Orangeola" tag and paint on it. Does it look like Orangeola? Yes. Can I ever be 100% sure? No. I do know for sure it's not Tamukeyama, though!

As for height, my newly planted baby dissectums are putting on about 6-8" a year. In all shade that might be a little slower. A lot of the red dissectums like some sun.

Well, it should be labeled either Red Select OR Crimson Queen but it can't be both. They are NOT the same tree. And at this point in time, it looks even less like Crimson Queen than it does Red Select, so I'm even more confused :-)

...but yes, Crimson Queen is not Red Select. If you post a photo of your tree's leaves, it might be helpful. Right now they don't look like either, but it could be because the tree is leafing out and the leaves aren't typical yet.

And that's not correct, either :-) 'Red Select' is from a seedling of 'Inaba Shidare' but they are not the same tree.

The nursery is probably getting its information from Vertrees' 4th. In it he redirects 'Red Select' and 'Select Red' to 'Inaba Shidare,' and says they are reported to be the same cultivar, though at least he says there is some debate about this.
